Selling or Buying a Used Car Seat: What to Check First
By Mia Chen · Published on November 03, 2026
A car seat is one of the most important pieces of gear a family owns, so a used one needs more care than a used T-shirt. KidResize treats car seats, bases and boosters as restricted items. They can be listed only when the seller confirms a short safety checklist.
The seller checklist
To list a car seat, base or booster on KidResize, the seller must confirm all of the following on the listing form:
- Not expired. The seat is not past the manufacturer's expiration date.
- No crash history. It has never been in a crash of any severity.
- Complete and original. It has all original parts, straps, padding, labels and instructions, with no replaced or aftermarket parts.
- Not recalled. It is not under recall, checked by make, model and manufacture date at nhtsa.gov/recalls on the day of listing.
The seller must also upload a clear photo of the label showing the model number and manufacture date.
What buyers should do
KidResize does not inspect, test or verify car seats, and the checklist above is the seller's statement. Before using a used seat, check the label, the expiration date and the recall status yourself. Read the manufacturer's instructions, and if you are unsure how to install the seat, ask a certified child passenger safety technician for help.
If a seat turns out not to match the seller's confirmations, it counts as not as described. Contact support within 3 days of delivery.
If you are not sure, do not list it
If you do not know a seat's full history, such as whether it has been in a crash, it should not be resold. See section 11 of the KidResize Terms for the full rules.
